The Green Operating Room: Sustainability in Anesthesiology

Duarte, CA US
June 15, 2023

Presently, anesthesiology is practiced without regard to its impact on the world.  Given that the gases and equipment that are used in this specialty have such a long-lasting effect on the environment, it is important to understand these effects. Understanding that the contribution to global warming is real, and that it can be minimized, will better-equip appropriate staff to choose equipment and anesthetics that are more environmentally sound, yet still meet the needs of patients at City of Hope.

During medical school and subsequent specialty residency training, doctors are not taught much about the impact of medical practice on pollution and global warming, thus, medical practices are generally not geared toward being environmentally friendly. This activity aims to improve this knowledge gap for anesthesiologists, nurse anesthetists and perioperative staff at City of Hope, via evidence-based innovations in anesthesiology and perioperative medicine, in order to minimize the effects of anesthetic gases and waste pollution on global warming.

Target Audience

Anesthesiologists, certified nurse anesthetists, and perioperative staff working in the operating rooms.

Learning Objectives

  • Examine actions in the delivery of anesthesia that contribute most to greenhouse effect.
  • Identify actions that contribute most to trash/waste pollution.
  • Integrate strategies to minimize contribution of anesthetic to greenhouse effect.
  • Discuss alternatives that decrease trash/waste pollution.
  • Discuss possible barriers and biases which may impact patient care (i.e., race, ethnicity, language, gender identity/orientation, age, socioeconomic status, attitudes, feelings, or other characteristics).
