June 28, 2023 | Clinical Cancer Genomics "Working Group"
The technologies that produce genetic information and contribute to the evidence base related to genomically-informed care are rapidly evolving, as well as the process of identifying, interpreting and developing personalized risk management plans related to heritable risk factors for cancer in a given individual or family is a complex interprofessional process.
Genetic testing for cancer risk can raise considerable psychological, social and ethical considerations. The central purpose of Working Group case conferencing is to address challenges and decisions directly related to patient care for clinicians with established genetic cancer risk assessment (GCRA) practices at City of Hope and in community-based settings. Presenting clinicians summarize the relevant features and key issues or challenges related to cases seen for genetic cancer risk assessment and testing for hereditary predisposition. Knowledge and skills are shared collaboratively through open discussion among interdisciplinary participants to develop strategies for cancer risk assessment and genetic testing, test results interpretation, development of individualized cancer risk surveillance and management recommendations and patient candidacy for research protocols, and to discuss health insurance, patient and family communication, bioethics, patient-related psychosocial issues and barriers to care.
Target Audience
Physicians, Physician Assistants, Genetic Counselors, Master's or PhD in Genetics or Advanced Practice Nurses, and Geneticists.
