2023 Department of Medicine Grand Rounds | Sleep Disorders from the Perspective of A Non-Sleep Physician
Epidemiological studies suggest that there is a direct correlation between sleep disorders and increased risk of morbidity from obesity, diabetes, neurobehavioral functional and cardiac disease. Ideally, knowledge of this correlation will lead to prevent complications of these diseases and ultimately, improved patient care. In our current practice we are lacking this knowledge.
Not having a sleep medicine program at City of Hope is a major barrier, therefore, it is imperative to bring awareness of the etiology, and impact of sleep disorders on other diseases such as cardiac and endocrine disorders, and provide strategies to our clinicians, that can be recommended to patients, which will facilitate closing this gap, and help achieve improvements in population health.
Target Audience
All physicians.
Learning Objectives
- Examine the pathophysiology of sleep-related disorders.
- Identify how to diagnose sleep-related disorders.
- Discuss comorbidities associated with diseases such as diabetes, obesity and cardiovascular diseases.
- Outline treatment strategies for sleep disorders.
- Discuss possible barriers and biases which may impact patient care (i.e., race, ethnicity, language, gender identity/orientation, age, socioeconomic status, attitudes, feelings, or other characteristics).
