2026 Surgery Grand Rounds | From Same Day Robotic Hepatectomy to Three-Day Robotic Whipple: The Only Constant is Change
Minimally invasive and robotic approaches to hepatobiliary and pancreatic surgery are rapidly evolving, yet many surgeons remain unfamiliar with the technical considerations, perioperative management strategies, and outcomes data. This gap leads to variability in practice and delays in broader adoption of evidence-based surgical innovation.
The gap exists due to limited exposure to high-volume centers, a steep learning curve for robotic surgery, and insufficient dissemination of recent outcomes data. There is also ongoing debate about patient selection, cost-effectiveness, and long-term oncologic results.
Target Audience
The activity content is oriented to address the educational needs of surgical oncologists, hepatobiliary and pancreatic surgeons, gastroenterologists, surgical trainees, and allied health professionals involved in complex oncologic surgery.
Learning Objectives
- Outline the current role of robotic approaches in complex hepatobiliary and pancreatic surgery.
- Examine patient selection criteria and perioperative management strategies for robotic liver and pancreas procedures.
- Discuss the evidence supporting outcomes, challenges, and cost-effectiveness of robotic hepatopancreatobiliary surgery.
- Identify strategies to integrate evolving surgical technologies into practice to optimize patient care.
