Benign Indications for Radiation Therapy: Expanding Access, Understanding, and Impact

This activity is necessary to raise awareness among primary care providers about the growing body of clinical evidence supporting the use of radiation therapy for select benign conditions. The knowledge gap persists because benign indications for radiation therapy are rarely included in standard medical curricula or primary care-focused continuing education, and many providers do not interact regularly with radiation oncologists. As a result, benign radiotherapy is underutilized despite being cost-effective, non-invasive, and well-tolerated. Addressing this gap will help primary care clinicians better identify patients who may benefit from referral to radiation oncology, ultimately expanding access to this treatment modality and improving patient care.

Many primary care providers are unaware that low-dose radiation therapy can be an effective treatment option for several benign, non-oncologic conditions—including Dupuytren’s disease, Ledderhose disease, plantar fasciitis, and certain cases of osteoarthritis. Currently, these conditions are often managed conservatively or with surgical intervention, without consideration of radiation therapy as a viable, evidence-based alternative. The ideal practice would involve early referral to radiation oncology for patients who are appropriate candidates, which could potentially lead to better symptom control, reduced need for surgery, and improved long-term outcomes. This gap exists due to limited exposure to radiation therapy during medical education and the traditional association of radiation exclusively with cancer treatment.
