Robotic Surgery in Colorectal Cancer and Surgical Therapies for Peritoneal Metastasis
There is inconsistent awareness of evolving diagnosis, surveillance and treatment options for colorectal cancer and peritoneal metastasis, including when to refer patients to specialized multidisciplinary cancer center and surgical evaluation. Currently, patients may not consistently receive timely multidisciplinary evaluation or consideration of specialized surgical and systemic treatment options. The goal is for providers to recognize appropriate patients early and facilitate timely referral to multidisciplinary teams for individualized evidence-based treatment. Clinicians need to have an understanding of current management strategies, enhancing recognition of patients who may benefit from subspecialty evaluation, allowing for timely referral to multidisciplinary teams. Improved provider knowledge and referral practices can help ensure patients receive individualized, guideline-concordant care and access to the full spectrum of available treatment options.
Treatment options for colorectal cancer and peritoneal metastasis continue to change, and providers may not be aware of the latest approaches or when to refer patients for specialized care. As a result, patients may experience delays in diagnosis, referral or access to specialized treatment. It is imperative for providers to stay current in order to make timely treatment and referral decisions. This education will help ensure patients receive the right care at the right time and improve overall outcomes.

- Recognize the early signs, symptoms, and risk factors for colorectal cancer.
- Apply current evidence-based guidelines for evaluation and diagnosis.
- Incorporate best practices into clinical care to support early diagnosis
- Identify patients who require additional testing or specialty services.
- Discuss possible barriers and biases which may impact patient care (i.e., race, ethnicity, language, gender identity/orientation, age, socioeconomic status, attitudes, feelings, or other characteristics).
