Atypical ductal hyperplasia (ADH) and lobular carcinoma in situ (LCIS) are benign breast disease, however, can be at high risk for breast cancer. Understanding the biology and treatment of ADH and LCIS is imperative for breast cancer prevention. These diagnoses are often viewed differently across providers because they represent elevated breast cancer risk rather than an active cancer diagnosis. As a result, practice may vary in how patients are counseled, screened and offered risk-reduction strategies.
New data and evolving recommendations continue to shape how ADH and LCIS are evaluated and managed. These conditions are complex and require clinicians to distinguish between cancer risk, cancer diagnosis, appropriate surveillance, and preventative treatment options. Education will help align practice by clarifying evidence-based approaches and correcting misinformation that may lead to unnecessary testing or missed opportunities for risk education.
Target Audience
Physicians evaluating and treating breast atypical ductal hyperplasia and lobular carcinoma in situ, and all other allied health care professionals interested in the subject matter.

- Examine the biology of atypical ductal hyperplasia (ADH) and lobular carcinoma in situ (LCIS)
- Distinguish between breast cancer risk and a breast cancer diagnosis in the evaluation of ADH and LCIS.
- Discuss the role and benefits of drug-based prevention strategies for patients at elevated breast cancer risk.
- Identify appropriate screening strategies for patients with ADH and LCIS.
- Discuss possible barriers and biases which may impact patient care (i.e., race, ethnicity, language, gender identity/orientation, age, socioeconomic status, attitudes, feelings, or other characteristics).
