Clinicians need to understand and have the confidence to recognize breast cancer risk and symptoms in younger women in or to provide timely, age-appropriate evaluation and specialty care. Furthermore, there exists a gap in addressing genetic risk, fertility, psychosocial needs, sexual health, survivorship, and other whole-person concerns throughout treatment. Currently, breast cancer risk and symptoms in younger women may be underrecognized, resulting in delayed evaluation and appropriate multidisciplinary care. Ideally, clinicians promptly recognize age-specific risks and symptoms, initiate appropriate diagnostic evaluation, and coordinate multidisciplinary, equitable care that addresses both clinical treatment and the whole-person needs of younger women throughout the cancer journey. 

Breast cancer in younger women is less common and may not be suspected early, while routine screening guidelines primarily target older women. Clinicians may also have limited education on age-specific risk assessment, genetic testing, and integrating psychosocial and survivorship needs into coordinated care. There is also limited training on early-onset breast cancer, inconsistent use of individualized risk assessment, unfamiliarity with the genetic and HER2 biomarker testing, and rapidly evolving treatment recommendations may contribute to delayed diagnostic evaluation. Clinicians need to stay abreast of age-specific risks, early recognition, timely diagnostic evaluation, and appropriate coordinated care efforts in order to properly care for this patient population as a whole.
