Advances in Women’s Health: Precision Prevention for Gynecologic Cancers and Pelvic Organ Prolapse Overview
There is a need to provide clinicians with information on the support strategies available in helping patients achieve optimal outcomes in the setting of the diagnosis of gynecologic cancer and management of pelvic floor dysfunction. 80% of patients with ovarian cancer are diagnosed with advanced stage disease, which results in significant morbidity and mortality. Prevention and risk reduction are the best strategies to impact overall survival in ovarian cancer. Prevention and timely diagnosis of endometrial cancer are essential to improve survival and decrease incidence. The landscape for cervical cancer screening is changing rapidly with new guidelines, including HPV self-collection kits. These guidelines are key for effective cervical cancer screening. Identification and prevention of pelvic organ prolapse is an essential part of cancer care survivorship.
Clinicians must be equipped to evaluate and treat patients with gynecologic cancers, as well as those with pelvic organ prolapse. It is imperative to address the latest evidence and guidelines regarding diagnostic studies, physical exams, imaging and interventions for providers caring for these patients. This program will discuss the prevention and diagnosis of gynecologic cancer and pelvic floor disorders with a focus on the evolving treatment paradigms for genetic testing, diagnostic studies including imaging and circulating tumor DNA, optimization of lifestyle decisions, and interventions for pre-cancers of the gynecologic organs. Additionally, this program will describe interventions to improve quality of life, with a focus on urinary tract infections (UTIs), urinary incontinence, and pelvic organ prolapse after treatment for pelvic pre-cancer and/or cancer.
Target Audience
Family practitioners, internal medicine, gynecology and obstetrics, medical oncologists, radiation oncologists, gynecologic oncologists, and other allied healthcare providers interested in the topic of caring for patients at risk for gynecologic cancer and pelvic floor disorders.
Learning Objectives
- Implement risk stratification and screening algorithms to identify asymptomatic or high-risk patients who require targeted surveillance or prophylactic strategies for gynecologic malignancies (e.g., ovarian, endometrial, cervical, and vulvar cancers).
- Evaluate early clinical signs and symptoms of gynecologic cancers using appropriate diagnostic modalities—including ultrasound, biomarkers, and tissue sampling—to streamline prompt specialty care and stage-appropriate management
- Integrate multidisciplinary preventive care guidelines into primary care and gynecologic practice to facilitate shared decision-making, patient education, and long-term risk management strategies.
- Diagnose pelvic floor disorders—including pelvic organ prolapse, urinary incontinence, and fecal incontinence—by conducting comprehensive patient histories, focused clinical examinations, and relevant urodynamic or imaging assessments.
- Discuss possible barriers and biases which may impact patient care (i.e., race, ethnicity, language, gender identity/orientation, age, socioeconomic status, attitudes, feelings, or other characteristics).
