2021 Pediatric Grand Rounds | Rh Blood Group and the Significance of RHAG Mutation
Molecular advances in benign hematology (Rh blood group incompatibilities or RHAG mutations) can offer novel insights that can impact care. While recognition of an incompatibility and treatment have become standard practices in newborn management, the expected course of the disease varies depending on the etiology. Currently, several multigene panels must be sent out to diagnosis etiology of incompatibility, but advances in NGS technology allow a single test to return results that can be utilized for patient management.
Benign hematologic conditions can impact management in pediatric oncology care. The purpose of this lecture is to update practitioners of malignant conditions with advances in benign hematologic conditions, such as Rh blood group incompatibilities or RHAG mutations.
Target Audience
City of Hope Pediatric Hematology/Oncology physicians, advance practice practitioners, City of Hope staff and research teams.
Learning Objectives
- Identify hemolytic anemias caused by Rh Group incompatibilities or RHAG mutations, including RHnull phenotype.
- Demonstrate ability to work up cause of Rh/RHAG associated hemolytic anemia and their management.
- Explore importance of RHAG to cation exchange/ammonium metabolism and relationship to development of stomatocytes/hemolytic anemia.
