2021 Pediatric Grand Rounds | Adolescent-Young Adult (AYA) Neuro-Oncology

The adolescent-young adult (AYA) population is an underserved population as the biology of their diseases and ability to tolerate therapy places them in a category that is neither best served by adult or pediatric specialists.  They require a dedicated focus that addresses the uniqueness of the disease biologies that afflict this population, as well as an attention to unique issues they face (fertility, school/work, changing responsibilities and identity).  Additionally, there are numerous clinical trials to address neuro-oncology as it remains an area of high mortality within oncology. 

The purpose of this lecture is to update pediatric oncologists on the current state of adolescent-young adult (AYA) neuro-oncology, by providing an update on the state of current trials as well as pinpointing the unique demands that the AYA population faces. 
 

Target Audience

City of Hope Pediatric Hematology/Oncology physicians, advance practice practitioners, City of Hope staff and research teams.

Learning Objectives

  • Identify indications for eligibility for current and upcoming adolescent-young adult (AYA) neuro-oncology trials.
  • Examine the status of the current literature forming the basis of the current AYA neuro-oncology trials.
  • Integrate AYA care into neuro-oncology management where appropriate.
  • Outline the various types of cultural diversities (gender, age, race, religion, culture, etc.) that relate to demographics, diagnosis and treatment.
