2021 Department of Supportive Care Medicine Grand Rounds | Interactive Communication Skills Training for Healthcare Practitioners

Duarte, CA US
December 2, 2021

Communication is central to the clinician-patient relationship.  There are different communication challenges at all phases of the cancer trajectory.  These discussions are typically emotionally charged and overwhelming. For this reason, it is important that practitioners develop trust with the patient, and learn to identify and respond to patients’ emotions, and sort out when their own emotions interfere with effective communication.

Most clinicians do not receive detailed or specific training on how to communicate effectively with cancer patients. Practicing better communication will help practitioners become more comfortable, concise, and well versed in their communication with patients and families, which may assist them in circumstances where there is a lack of time to assess or counsel patients and families. It is imperative that clinicians are provided with real-life examples, to fully understand and apply  such techniques to their practice.  This lecture will provide an overview of the training at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, and will allow for an evaluation of the program.
