2022 Department of Supportive Care Medicine Grand Rounds | Achieving Health Equity in Cancer Care for Asian American Patients

Achieving health equity is vital in supportive care for cancer treatment, however, incidences of health disparity in the United States continue to be prevalent and immediate. Practical solutions are needed to promote health equity for minority patients.

Due to cultural barriers and health stereotypes, Asian Americans (AAs) comprise an underserved group with significantly lower cancer screening rates, lower surveillance rate, and less amount of medical information received compared to other races and ethnicities for most common cancers. This disparity results in AAs receiving less help, which, in turn, may contribute to later diagnoses and higher morbidity and mortality rates. The activity will share research on specific cultural needs from Asian American patients for health care providers to better understand sources of distress and promote treatment outcomes that best align with patient values.

All health care providers of the multidisciplinary team.

Learning Objectives

  • Assess the cultural barriers encountered by Asian and Asian American patients.
  • Identify specific cultural needs from the perspectives of patients and families. 
  • Promote treatment outcomes that are best aligned with the cultural values of Asian and Asian American patients.
  • Achieve health equity in supportive care in hospital setting and improve quality of life for Asian American patients.
  • Discuss possible barriers and biases which may impact patient care (i.e., race, ethnicity, language, gender identity/orientation, age, socioeconomic status, attitudes, feelings, or other characteristics).
