2022 Department of Medicine Grand Rounds | Utility of Myocardial Strain Imaging in Cardio-Oncology
Ejection fraction (EF) has been the primary method of measuring the strength of the heart for the past 70 years. In the practice of cardio-oncology, we find that EF reduction is often a late manifestation of cardiotoxicity. There is a need for earlier detection of heart damage.
Myocardial strain imaging has emerged over the past decade as a more sensitive tool for detecting smaller degrees of cardiac dysfunction. The practice of measuring myocardial strain during echocardiography is still relatively new in the Cardiology community, and most clinicians outside of the subspecialty have little knowledge of its utility and significance as it pertains to cardiovascular changes in their patients. Education on this topic is needed in order to increase awareness of this available tool and the significance of abnormal findings reported in clinical echocardiography reports.
Target Audience
Physicians, and APP's - campus wide.
Learning Objectives
- Discuss the concept of myocardial strain.
- Outline indications for requesting myocardial strain evaluation.
- Identify how to order myocardial strain management at City of Hope.
- Distinguish normal values vs. abnormal values for myocardial strain.
