2023 Surgery Grand Rounds | Surgical Palliative Care in Oncology: What is It? How Do I Do It?
Surgical palliative care remains an important cornerstone of care for patients with cancer but is not formally taught in most training programs, including surgical oncology, gynecologic oncology, or urologic oncology. Current practice is often guided by physicians with training in palliative care rather than surgery, with surgeons acting merely as technicians and lacking knowledge of current cutting edge practice and future directions. However, surgical palliative care has emerged as an area of rapid growth in recent years and City of Hope clinicians would benefit from a lecture from an expert in this field in order to incorporate new thoughts and practices into our practice here at City of Hope.
Target Audience
Practicing physicians, trainees, advanced practice providers, and support staff.
Learning Objectives
- Identify surgical patients in need of palliative care.
- Communicate the unique risks, benefits, and alternative of palliative versus curative procedures in oncology.
- Describe communication tools useful in communicating bad news and poor prognosis.
- Discuss the barriers to integrating palliative care into surgical care.
- Discuss possible barriers and biases which may impact patient care (i.e., race, ethnicity, language, gender identity/orientation, age, socioeconomic status, attitudes, feelings, or other characteristics).
