2024 Department of Medicine Grand Rounds | Clinical Applications and Value of Coronary CT

Duarte, CA US
December 4, 2024

Cardiac CT is a relatively new modality, resulting in a dearth of education on the subject. Most physicians did not have access to coronary CTA during training, and thus it is underutilized even while it has become widely available. At a center without a cardiac cath lab, we feel this modality needs to be utilized to a greater extent to enhance patient care.

There is a lack of understanding of the role of coronary CT angiography (CTA) in the general healthcare provider community, resulting in underutilization of this testing modality. Patients are referred for less specific tests such as nuclear SPECT or invasive tests such as cardiac catheterization. We aim to reduce this knowledge gap and impart an understanding of appropriate indications for ordering coronary CT angiograms.

Target Audience

All healthcare providers.

Learning Objectives

  • Examine the sensitivity and specificity of coronary CT for the diagnosis of coronary artery disease (CAD).
  • Identify appropriate indications for utilization of coronary CT.
  • Discuss the advantages and disadvantages of coronary CT.
  • Identify which patients should be referred for stress testing vs coronary CT vs cardiac catheterization.
  • Discuss possible barriers and biases which may impact patient care (i.e., race, ethnicity, language, gender identity/orientation, age, socioeconomic status, attitudes, feelings, or other characteristics).
