2024 Science of Caring Grand Rounds | Integrative Oncology: Emerging Paradigms of Care Delivery and Priority Research Questions
Oncology clinicians have limited knowledge regarding the field of integrative oncology. This is due for multiple reasons, including that it is a new field and limited formal education exists for most medical students, residents, and fellows. Additionally, limited high quality clinical research exists, but is growing.
The educational gap in medical practice regarding the role of integrative oncology for cancer patients is underscored by several critical issues. The Society for Integrative Oncology-ASCO guideline highlights the benefits of integrative medicine for pain management but points out that many healthcare providers lack the training to implement these approaches effectively. There is a need for integration of these therapies into standard oncology practice within clinical care networks. Reluctance to discuss complementary and integrative medicine with patients stems from a lack of provider knowledge and confidence, which can hamper effective patient-provider communication. Additionally, there is a gap between the recognized importance of supportive and integrative oncology services and their actual utilization, driven by insufficient familiarity among healthcare providers. Addressing this gap is essential for the comprehensive care of cancer patients.
