2025 Endocrinology Grand Rounds | Endocrinology-disrupting Chemicals

Duarte, CA US
August 6, 2025

There is still a lot to learn about Endocrine-disruptive Chemicals (EDC) impact on health. EDCs don't have large-scale trials, data is often obtained from epidemiological studies or animal models, which some clinicians find less convincing.  EDCs are found in everyday products—plastics, cosmetics, pesticides, food packaging, and more. Since endocrinologists diagnose and treat hormone-related disorders, understanding how EDCs affect these systems is essential.

EDCs can mimic, block, or alter hormone signals, leading to disruptions in processes like growth, metabolism, reproduction, and mood regulation.  The Endocrine Society has emphasized the importance of EDCs in public health.  Noting their potential role in chronic diseases like diabetes, obesity, and hormone-sensitive cancers.  Asking targeted questions about lifestyle, occupation, and product use could help to evaluate potential EDC exposure. It is imperative to create awareness and increase interest in public health and environmental toxins and their impact on Endocrinology care.
