2025 Endocrinology Grand Rounds | Key Highlights of the 2025 American Thyroid Association Thyroid and Pregnancy Guidelines

Duarte, CA US
June 11, 2025

Currently, many clinicians are generally familiar with the management of thyroid conditions during pregnancy. However, there is a noticeable gap when it comes to staying current with the latest guidelines set forth by the American Thyroid Association (ATA). At institutions such as City of Hope, this issue may be further compounded by the limited number of pregnant patients they typically encounter, which results in fewer opportunities for hands-on experience and continuing education in this specific area. As a result, clinicians may feel less confident and less prepared when it comes to advising and educating pregnant women on the critical role thyroid health plays during pregnancy. This may hinder the quality of care and the ability to proactively identify and manage thyroid-related complications that could affect both maternal and fetal health.

The limited clinical exposure to thyroid management in pregnancy that City of Hope clinicians face is further influenced by the overall low incidence and prevalence of thyroid abnormalities during pregnancy, making such cases relatively uncommon in daily practice. As a result, there are fewer opportunities for hands-on learning and clinical experience in this area. Compounding the issue is the scarcity of structured educational opportunities focused specifically on thyroid health in pregnancy. Training sessions, workshops, or continuing medical education (CME) courses dedicated to this topic are infrequent, which contributes to a knowledge gap among providers. This lack of exposure and education may ultimately impact clinicians' confidence and ability to manage thyroid-related concerns effectively during pregnancy.
