2025 Science of Caring Grand Rounds | Integrative Oncology: A New Paradigm of Care

February 4, 2025

The primary knowledge deficit in integrative oncology is the limited understanding and integration of evidence-based complementary therapies in cancer care among many healthcare providers. While current practice often focuses predominantly on conventional cancer treatments such as chemotherapy, radiation, and surgery, ideal practice would include a comprehensive approach that incorporates integrative therapies such as nutrition, mind-body medicine, and lifestyle interventions, supported by clinical evidence to enhance patient outcomes and quality of life. Bridging this gap requires provider education, increased clinical trial data, and multidisciplinary collaboration to seamlessly incorporate integrative therapies alongside standard care.

It is necessary to enhance the integration of holistic, evidence-based practices into oncology care, ultimately improving patient outcomes and well-being. There is a lack of comprehensive education for healthcare providers on integrative therapies, inconsistent clinical data dissemination, and barriers within healthcare systems to adopting a multidisciplinary approach. Additionally, skepticism regarding non-conventional modalities and insufficient funding for research in this area further hinders the widespread implementation of integrative oncology practices.

Target Audience

This activity is oriented to address the educational needs of multidisciplinary clinicians in oncology.

Learning Objectives

  • Integrate evidence-based integrative therapies into educational initiatives and clinical training programs for healthcare providers, enhancing their ability to support patient outcomes and quality of life.
  • Discuss effective educational strategies to overcome common barriers to implementing integrative oncology, such as increasing provider awareness and fostering multidisciplinary collaboration within clinical and community settings.
  • Assess and critically evaluate the latest clinical research and case studies on complementary therapies to guide educational content and curriculum development for both providers and patients.
  • Discuss possible barriers and biases which may impact patient care (i.e., race, ethnicity, language, gender identity/orientation, age, socioeconomic status, attitudes, feelings, or other characteristics).
