2025 Surgery Grand Rounds | The Intelligent Surgeon's Toolbox: Merging Image-Guided Precision, Robotics and AI for Patient-Centered Care

Duarte, CA US
November 13, 2025

A lecture on merging image guidance, robotics and AI for patient-centered care is necessary to address the lack of standardized guidelines in the evolving field of surgical innovation. The gap exists due to insufficient clinical trials in the early phases of adoption, variable awareness among providers, and the historical approaches in absence of such technological capacities to support surgical decision-making peri- and intraoperatively. By educating clinicians on emerging technological tools and multidisciplinary approaches to best train and use AI for surgical guidance, this lecture can promote more consistent and effective integration of surgical innovation into clinical practice and foster dedicated research and evaluation protocols.

Robotic surgery is widespread but the integration of AI as well as image guided surgery for oncology is lacking. Currently, cancer surgery is done either by a surgeon's vision alone and in conjuntion with preoperative imaging. Dynamic, intraoperative image guidance or fluorescent guided surgery will facilitate more precise oncologic resection. AI has not been fully developed for routine use in clinical practice on a daily basis, nor for surgical procedures.

Target Audience

Surgeons, APPs in the context of how to utilize AI, image guidance and robotics.

Learning Objectives

  • Evaluate the current state of image-guided surgery, AI, and robotics.
  • Discuss the application of imaging to guide surgical resections.
  • Incorporate strategies on how to utilize current AI technology to improve patient care.
  • Identify future opportunities for AI integration into surgical care.
