Forward2026 Department of Medicine Grand Rounds | Changing Paradigms: Pulmonary Hypertension in 2026
Pulmonary hypertension is being diagnosed more frequently in cancer patients. It often presents as an unexplained and rapid onset dyspnea. It is primarily caused by cancer therapies including chemo, radiation therapies and tumor emboli. Understanding of pathophysiology, early diagnosis and management of these patients may reduce mortality. It is imperative to stay abreast of the data, areas of controversy and quality surrounding the diagnosis and management of pulmonary hypertension.
Implementation of logistical barriers are one reason a gap exists. Others include the extreme cost of treatment and complex management, as well as survivorship, which is not well understood. This activity will discuss real-world issues such as insurance, which is a major barriers and discuss solutions.
Target Audience
Physicians and advanced practice providers, and all other allied health care professionals interested in the subject matter.
Learning Objectives
- Identify key quality metrics to screen cancer patients for pulmonary hypertension.
- Demonstrate an understanding of diagnosis of pulmonary hypertension.
- Integrate published data on best practice in management of pulmonary hypertension.
- Discuss possible barriers and biases which may impact patient care (i.e., race, ethnicity, language, gender identity/orientation, age, socioeconomic status, attitudes, feelings, or other characteristics).
