2026 Department of Medicine Grand Rounds | An Evidence-based Approach to Building a Colon Cancer Screening Program

May 20, 2026

Colon cancer rates remain on the rise despite effective ways to prevent with screening. It is the third most common cancer and the second most common cancer death in the US.  The effectiveness of screening programs for colon cancer rely on high-quality screening. City of Hope has been building an evidence-based colon cancer screening program, providing an opportunity to share best practices/evidence from the literature and disseminate real-world issues with implementation.

Real-world issues like insurance issues can provide barriers to screening. Implementation of logistical barriers and integration of increasingly complex electronic health records can also have a negative impact. Additionally, survivorship and prevention of secondary cancers is not a well understood or researched topic. It is imperative to stay up to date with current guidelines. This activity aims to highlight key areas of data, controversy and quality surrounding colon cancer screening.

Target Audience

Physicians, APPs, and all other allied health care professionals interested in the subject matter.

Learning Objectives

  • Identify key quality metrics of a colon cancer screening program.
  • Demonstrate understanding of appropriate patients for colon cancer screening.
  • Integrate published data on best practices in colon cancer screening into practice.
  • Discuss possible barriers and biases which may impact patient care (i.e., race, ethnicity, language, gender identity/orientation, age, socioeconomic status, attitudes, feelings, or other characteristics).
