2026 Surgery Grand Rounds | Diffuse Disease, Focused Intervention: Reconsidering the Surgeon’s Role in Stage IV Cancer

Duarte, CA US
April 30, 2026

As a complex cancer center we provide care for patients with metastatic disease very frequently. In order to deliver the highest care with optimal outcomes we should learn from other similar cancer centers. There is often limited published data for surgery in patients with metastatic disease.

Patients with metastatic cancer often are treated with systemic therapy alone. The role of surgery in this setting is controversial often with limited data. The understanding of multidisciplinary care for our patients with metastatic cancer and the role of surgery within this context is critical for optimizing outcomes.

Target Audience

The activity content is oriented to address the educational needs of surgeons, medical oncologists and pulmonologists that treat lung cancer, surgical trainees, and allied health professionals involved in complex oncologic surgery.

Learning Objectives

  • Examine the evolving clinical evidence supporting surgical intervention in the setting of metastatic (Stage IV) disease.
  • Identify patient selection criteria for focused surgical intervention in diffuse cancer presentations.
  • Discuss the multidisciplinary integration of surgery with systemic therapies for advanced-stage malignancies.
  • Discuss possible barriers and biases which may impact patient care (i.e., race, ethnicity, language, gender identity/orientation, age, socioeconomic status, attitudes, feelings, or other characteristics).
