Comparative Effectiveness Research Using Network Meta-analysis

Methods for evaluating comparative effectiveness of competing treatments are not fully developed. Many treatments are introduced in practice, but they are never evaluated against each other. As a result, practitioners are at a loss as to which treatment to recommend. It is, therefore, imperative to fully understand the principles of network meta-analysis and how to use results in the care of patients.

Physicians, nurses, and other allied health professionals.

  • Describe when network meta-analysis is an appropriate tool to address comparative effectiveness.
  • Examine the fundamental mechanics of conducting a network meta-analysis.
  • Interpret the results of a network meta-analysis.
