July 17, 2023 | Patient Provider Communication Training Workshop: The 4 Interaction Habits of Effective Providers (Session 1)
Research over the last 40 years has consistently linked clinician communication skills with patient outcomes including improved adherence to medical regimens, reduced psychological distress, improvement in chronic health conditions, increased satisfaction, and reduced liability insurance claims. As patients and families have ever increasing access to sources of healthcare information they come to encounters with theories and expectations of their own that must be understood and negotiated with treating clinicians.
There is evidence that specific clinician communication skills and demeanors improve time efficiency in the encounter, increase the likelihood that there will be agreement on evidence based treatment plans, and enhance the involvement of patients and families in their care.
Physicians and other allied healthcare providers who manage and treat patients.
- Identify the of the importance of clinician communication skills in creating the most effective encounters.
- Demonstrate specific communication skills, strategies and attitudes associated with best outcomes; such as efficient use of time/resources, increased patient and family satisfaction and agreement and adherence to mutually agreed up on treatment plans.
- Apply the skills applicable in typical clinical situations in outpatient and inpatient settings.
- Practice 2 communication behaviors prior to participating in workshop 2.
- Discuss possible barriers and biases which may impact patient care (i.e., race, ethnicity, language, gender identity/orientation, age, socioeconomic status, attitudes, feelings, or other characteristics).
