October 25, 2021 | Communication Strategies for Telehealth

October 25, 2021

Rapid increased utilization of telehealth prompted by COVID precautions left many providers, patients and families in unfamiliar territory, making ad-hoc adaptations to their previous in-person visits. We have now learned better how to adjust to telehealth and need to share these learnings and skills with our providers.

Providers are increasingly asked to conduct complex visits through telehealth. This is not a familiar situation for many providers and patients and families. Training is needed to adapt in-person interviewing approaches to the telehealth situation in order to maintain patient and family satisfaction and assure that the telehealth platform can safely and effectively address the clinical and communication concerns.

Target Audience

Providers at the MD, PhD, ARNP and PA levels and behavioral health providers as well as RNs who must establish diagnoses and treatment plans.

Learning Objectives

  • Examine a hybrid approach to conducting clinical visits with patients, which types of clinical issues to manage through telehealth and when insisting on in-person evaluation and treatment will be required.
  • Discuss and incorporate interaction strategies and skills to organize and conduct effective telehealth encounters.
  • Develop strategies for involving support staff in the telehealth process as adaptations to how they would have been involved in and supported in an in-clinic encounter.
  • Outline the various types of cultural diversities (gender, age, race, religion, culture, etc.) that relate to demographics, diagnosis and treatment.
