Test ~ Forgive Not Forget: The Role of Re-Irradiation

Duarte, CA US
June 29, 2020

The outcomes and toxicities associated with delivering a repeat course of radiation that overlaps with a prior site of treatment is not well understood to an audience outside the field of radiation oncology.  As patients continue to live longer with advances in systemic therapy/immunotherapy, the role of providing local therapy to progressing lesions, even those that have been previously radiated, are now becoming more prevalent scenarios. Outcomes and toxicities vary considerably by the disease site treated, and individual institution series have limited follow-up.  As such, a review for a general oncology audience is indicated.

Target Audience

Physicians, nurses and all healthcare professionals interested in the subject matter.

Learning Objectives

  • Identify toxicities associated with re-irradiation to the brain for recurrent brain metastases.
  • Describe clinical outcomes and toxicities following repeat course of radiation for recurrent and second primary head/neck cancer.
  • Outline dose parameters used to plan a course of re-irradiation for spinal metastases.
  • Examine toxicities and efficacy for re-irradiation to the thorax.
