Tobacco and Lung Cancer Disparities in LGBTQIA+ Populations

June 12, 2024

LGBTQIA+ populations are not discretely discussed as it pertains to Lung Cancer.  Research indicates that there is a disproportionate rate of smoking among members of LGBTQIA+, however, there is a lack of information reported regarding lung cancer and LGBT individuals as it is not obtained within the registries.  Ideal practice would be to obtain that information from the onset to better target tobacco cessation and lung cancer screening within this community.

Lack of education and trust among LGBTQIA+ individuals and healthcare institutions can play a major factor in this gap.  Additionally, there is a lack of reliable information  obtained regarding the sexual orientation of patient populations, especially within lung cancer registries.  This activity seeks to build trust and confidence among providers and clinical staff to treat and provide care for LGBTQIA+ individuals, resulting in better care for this patient population.

Target Audience

All City of Hope staff.
