Probability of Discovering New Cancer Treatments
Enrollment of patients and discovery of new treatment depends on the estimate of the probability of treatments tested in clinical trials but most physicians overestimate such a probability. There is a lack of knowledge of factors that determine the probability of treatment success.
Currently, most physicians overestimate treatment success when tested in clinical trials. As a result, the patients may be enrolled in trials with unrealistic expectations, which may result in unnecessary harms. Similarly, funders of clinical trials may invest in studies based on overoptimistic assessments. By learning about factors that determine the probability of treatment success, the clinicians and investigators can close knowledge gap that presents a key barrier to optimal evaluation of interventions in clinical trials. This, in turn, will result in more optimal enrollment of patients in clinical trials, and optimal discovery of new treatments.
Target Audience
All physicians who discuss new treatments with patients and all clinical investigators.
Learning Objectives
- Examine the probability of treatment success in phase 3 trials and probability of success in single arm trials.
- Outline the taxonomy of clinical uncertainties.
- Identify the relationship between treatment success and ethical foundation of clinical research.
